Financial Literacy & Economic Independence as Tools for Women Empowerment

Financial Literacy and Economic Independence as Tools for Women Empowerment Presented by Professor Binta Tijjani Jibril, Department of Economics, Bayero University, Kano, at the SSANU Annual National Women's Conference, held from 26th to 27th October 2026. This presentation explores the importance of financial literacy and economic independence in empowering women, strengthening their financial security and enhancing their capacity for effective leadership and meaningful contributions to society. It provides practical insights into financial planning, budgeting, responsible spending, savings, debt management, investment opportunities and protection against financial fraud. The presentation also highlights the importance of cooperative societies, financial discipline and making informed financial decisions, particularly in the face of rising living costs and increasing family responsibilities. In line with the conference theme, “Healthy Women, Strong Union: Positioning SSANU Women for Leadership and National Relevance,” the presentation emphasises that financial independence is essential to women's personal development, confidence, resilience and long-term economic well-being. It encourages SSANU women to adopt sustainable financial habits, maximise available income, explore legitimate wealth-building opportunities and work towards lasting financial stability. The central message is that financially informed and economically empowered women are better positioned to build stronger families, contribute meaningfully to their Union and play influential roles in national development.
