The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to ensuring the full implementation of the historic 2026 Federal Government/SSANU Agreement and the settlement of all outstanding entitlements owed to its members across Nigerian universities.
The National President of SSANU, Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, gave the assurance while addressing participants at the 2026 SSANU National Women Conference held in Abuja under the theme, "Healthy Women, Strong Union: Positioning SSANU Women for Leadership and National Relevance."
Speaking on the achievements recorded by the Union, Comrade Ibrahim described the signing of the Agreement on June 29, 2026, as a significant milestone in SSANU's sustained struggle for improved remuneration, enhanced welfare and better conditions of service for university workers.
He explained that the Agreement provides for a 35 per cent salary review through the Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure (CONTTA), improvements in allowances, career progression and other conditions of service, with effect from January 1, 2026.
The National President emphasised that the achievement was not accidental but the outcome of years of persistent negotiations, strategic engagements, sacrifices and unwavering solidarity among members.
He recalled that delays in implementing the Agreement and paying outstanding arrears compelled the Union to issue a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, demonstrating SSANU's determination to protect the legitimate interests of its members.
According to him, the Union's sustained engagement yielded positive results when the Federal Government released funds on October 7, 2026, for the payment of eight months of CONTTA arrears covering January to August 2026.
While acknowledging the progress recorded in implementing the revised salary structure and disbursing arrears, Comrade Ibrahim maintained that SSANU would continue its engagements until every outstanding entitlement and provision of the Agreement had been fully addressed.
«"While implementation and disbursement have commenced, we remain committed to ensuring full compliance with every provision of the Agreement and settlement of all outstanding entitlements."»
He dedicated the achievements to the collective determination of SSANU members, particularly women whose resilience, loyalty and active participation contributed significantly to the Union's successes.
Turning to the conference theme, the National President stressed that women's health, welfare, dignity and leadership development must remain central to the Union's priorities.
He observed that meaningful participation of women in leadership should extend beyond occupying positions to having the confidence, competence and influence necessary to shape policies and decisions affecting members and the wider society.
Comrade Ibrahim consequently encouraged SSANU women to become more actively involved in discussions and initiatives concerning education, workers' rights, gender equity, good governance and national development.
He further challenged participants to translate the conference deliberations into practical resolutions capable of strengthening women's representation, promoting leadership development and advancing their collective welfare.
The National President reiterated the commitment of the National Administrative Committee (NAC) to building an inclusive, united and progressive Union in which every member, irrespective of gender, enjoys equal opportunities to contribute, lead and excel.
He commended the National Women Coordinator and her team for successfully organising the conference, expressing confidence that the gathering would further strengthen women's contributions to SSANU's growth and national relevance.
SSANU remains resolute in its commitment to defending members' rights, promoting improved conditions of service and advancing the collective interests of university workers through unity, solidarity and constructive engagement.
